The Children's Handbell Choir

performed at St. Matts on

Sunday, March 4, 2012

From the front page of the March 8, 2012 edition of the Tomah Journal:

Julie Jacobson recalls the first time she heard a bell choir inside a church.

“As soon as they started to ring those bells, the tears started to fly and they wouldn’t stop,” she said. She never forgot that moment, and now she’s making new memories at St. Matthew Lutheran Church near Warrens.

Jacobson conducts the children's handbell choir at St. Matthew. The choir performs four to five times a year during Sunday services. They led off the March 4 service with “My Jesus, I Love Thee” and “How Great Thou Art.”

“She does an exemplary job,” Pastor Phillip Enderle said. “When they’re playing, you can see the joy and enthusiasm of youth.”

When Jacobson and her son, Tyler, began attending St. Matthew four years ago, Jacobson inquired about launching a bell choir. “I mentioned to the pastor, and we ran with it from there,” she said. “It serves me in my faith.” The choir consists of 24 to 40 children ranging in ages from three to 13. The bells are different colors based on their notes, and Jacobson directs the choir with a deck of color-coded cards.

Jacobson, who played the trumpet in high school, said the children catch on fast to the “krystal bell method. Once in a while we have a rehearsal, but it’s such a simple concept for them to understand,” she said. “It’s so well-put together but so simple.”

The choir also performs at senior centers, the Warrens Cranberry Festival and community Easter and Christmas dinners in Warrens. Jacobson believes a handbell choir is an effective way to introduce youngsters to music. For many choir members, it’s their first chance to play a musical instrument and perform in front of an audience.

Enderle said bell choir requires precision on the part of the director.

“If you pull the next card out before its time, you’re going to get messed up,” he said.

He said the children of the congregation embrace the opportunity to be part of a worship service.

“It’s an example of service,” he said. “There’s a joyfulness — I think they’re happy to be up there.”

Thanks to Steve Rundio, editor of the Tomah Journal, for taking the time to take photos of the St. Matts Children's Handbell Choir, and this interview of our wonderful Children's Handbell Choir Director Julie Jacobson.
