YOUTH GROUP NEWS

From the April 2018 St. Matthew Church Newsletter:

The Lord blesses each and every day. These blessings are sometimes small, sometimes large, and sometimes completely unnoticed in the hustle and bustle of every day life. When things are going right, it's easy to see and we are quick to say "Thank you, Lord, for my blessings!" When things are going wrong, when things are falling apart, it can be hard to see the blessings, but they're still there.

In youth group, we have been taking time every week to recount our blessings. We take a minute, write them out and hang them on the Blessings Wall. Some are small, some are large, but regardless of the size, each one is important to the individual. Some weeks it can take a few minutes to look back and find what your blessing may be. Other times you know the minute you walk in the door what your blessing will be. We always take that moment to acknowledge the ways in which the Lord has blessed us in the past week. It reminds all of us to say "Thank you, Lord, for my blessings!", even when we have to look to find them.

But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
Its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.
~
Jeremiah 17:7-8

March Madness has swept through Ignite!

It has been a busy month for the members between school activities, work and youth group. Everyone enjoyed last month's Bible Minute to Win It Tournament so much that we decided to continue with an Old Testament version. There are so many great stories to explore with the Old Testament and the challenges that come from them were quite fun. From Jacob's Ladder to the Walls of Jericho, competition was fierce.

To switch up teams, we played this tournament boys vs. girls, with the girls taking home the trophy. Congratulations, Ladies!!!

Members of Ignite are interested in starting a youth band! We are in search of a drum set. If you have one you wish to donate, contact Shannon.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Ignite continued working on its mission of Service Starts at Home. We held a 'Soup'er Sundays' canned food drive for Neighbor to Neighbor Food Pantry. We chose this month due to the fact that the Christmas season is a big time for donations but those drop off significantly in the new year. A big thank you to the congregation for all of your donations!

From the March 2018 St. Matthew Church Newsletter:

What a wonderful start to the year we've had in youth group! The members of Ignite would like to thank the congregation for the outpouring of support with our fundraiser. Our fresh-made pizza sale with Papa Murphy's brought in over $500 for the youth group. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This is the first fundraiser we've done in awhile, and to have it be so successful was amazing. We are looking forward to our future fundraising efforts as it will take a lot to get the kids to Minneapolis in 2019 for the National Youth Gathering.

Over the past month during our Wednesday youth group meetings, we've held a "Bible Minute to Win It - New Testament Tournament." Congratulations to Jenna, Cole, Sara, and Whitney who took the trophy for our New Testament round! Evan, Kaylee, Jordan, and Jason played a great game and made it a close series. The youth enjoyed it so much that this month we will begin the Old Testament version. In "Bible Minute to Win It," there are games and challenges that revolve around different Bible verses. We examine the verse and complete the challenges with the winning team earning a point for each round. The tournament consists of 12-15 different verses and challenges. We complete 3-4 verses per week, keeping a tally of each game's winners.

Also big for us this month was our first Lock-In of the year! Thirteen youth attended, with 11 of them being members of St. Matthew. We were happy to welcome a couple of friends of our youth members. It is always joyous to have an opportunity to share faith and fellowship with young people.

During the season of Lent we look at the sacrifice that Jesus made for us on the cross. During our Lock-In we took the opportunity to not only look at that sacrifice but closely examine what sacrifice meant by fasting. While it is small in comparison, the impact was still felt and the youth did a great job. Keeping our minds off of food was the goal for the evening. In our effort to do that, we played several different scavenger hunt games, played a Bible verse relay, and spent some time guiding each other through a trust walk.

We enjoyed a late night devotion together in the sanctuary. It was lovely to see the kids all seated together on the steps just as they did when they were younger during the children's message. We prayed together and sang together; it was a beautiful moment where we could all look back and forward at once. We wrapped the evening up with a movie before heading to bed.

Early in the morning hours, before the sun even began to rise, 2 little mice crept into the kitchen and began a feast for our hungry youth. Thank you, Karla and Sheryl, for the wonderful breakfast! There wasn't a scrap left. We as Ignite youth group and the Catechism class would like to thank the members of the congregation who donated to our event. Without those donations we wouldn't have been successful.

From the March 2017 St. Matthew Church Newsletter:

The Ignite Youth Group would like to thank everyone who came out to help and support us at our Sweetheart Supper fundraiser! With it only being the first year for the event, it was much larger than we ever dreamed it would be! We did not get an accurate count (since we were so busy), but it looked like we served around 80-90 guests. What an amazing kickoff event!

Some of the money earned from this fundraiser will be going towards upcoming trips and the "Feed My Starving Children" mission event this summer. We can't wait for next year's Sweetheart Supper!

From the November 2016 St. Matthew Church Newsletter:

We are planning a mission trip to Nashville, Tennessee for our youth group to:

LIVE THE FAITH + SERVE OTHERS + SHARE THE GOSPEL

Set aside June 26-30, 2017 and watch for more information to come soon!

From the October 2016 St. Matthew Church Newsletter:

Ignite is up and running!! If you're in high school and you haven't stopped by yet, I'd like to invite you to join us on Wednesday nights at 7:15pm. During Ignite meetings, we have time to relax and talk about things going on in our lives, play a short game, pray together, take in a quick lesson, and... enjoy some snacks!

Don't forget, friends are always welcome! I hope to see you there!!!

Please follow us on Facebook (St. Matthew Youth Group - Warrens) to up-to-date information about Ignite events.

Jenny Betthauser
Youth Director
(608) 344-0900

From the June 2016 St. Matthew Church Newsletter:

Hello!

My name is Jenny Betthauser, and I am the new Youth Director at St. Matthew! Working with kids is an absolute passion of mine and I am so excited to have the opportunity to connect with the youth of our church.

Here's a little bit more about me...

I was born and raised in Tomah, Wisconsin. I graduated from Tomah High School in 2006 and subsequently from Viterbo University in 2010. I have been a member of the Town of Lincoln Fire Department in Warrens for the past four years. While on the department, I have been able to obtain my Medical First Responder and CPR Instructor licenses. I am just completing my 5th year of teaching for the Tomah Area School District. Throughout that time, I've had the honor to teach 4-year-old kindergarten, 5th grade, direct Elementary Musicals, and also coach High School Girls JV soccer.

I am hoping that my love for children and God can be displayed through my work here at St. Matthew. To kick off the youth program, Pastor Enderle and I are planning a fun-filled lock-in at the church for 7th and 8th graders on Friday, June 10! Please check out the new Facebook page (St. Matthew - Youth Group) to keep up to date on current youth events and activities. I'm excited to see what God will do in our lives!!

KWIK TRIP SCRIP GIFT CARDS

Member of the St. Matts Youth Group are now selling Kwik Trip (KT) Scrip Gift Cards to help fund the Youth Group here at St. Matts!

The Youth Group will receive a percentage of every card they sell. The KT Scrip Gift Cards will not be any more expensive than the gas at the store - so a $1.00 gas card buys $1.00 of gas. For every $100 of KT Scrip Gift Cards purchased through this program, the Youth Group will receive $10. The money you pay for the card is the actual value you receive, unlike most fundraisers. The gift cards can be used for gasoline, diesel, or any merchandise or food in the store.

Here's how it works:

PURCHASE:

•Purchase the Kwik Trip Scrip Gift Cards from the St. Matts Youth Group.

•Before or after a Sunday Worship Service, look in the church narthex for a table set up with information, and a member of the Youth Group waiting to take your order.

•On the order form, indicate the number and denominations of the gift cards you would like to order. Denominations can be ordered in increments of $5, $10, $20, $25, $50, $100, $500.

PAYMENT:

•Order at church on Sunday morning, either before or after the Worship Service.

OR

•Print and complete a Scrips Gift Card ORDER FORM (pdf file).

•Bring your completed Scrips Gift Card Order Form to church, along with a check for the total amount.

Brewers Game Outing!

Sunday, June 3, 2012

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

Miller Park
Home of the Milwaukee Brewers

(Quotes below are from the legendary "Mr. Baseball" and 'the voice of the Brewers' Bob Uecker)

"The biggest thrill a ballplayer can have is when your son takes after you. That happened when my Bobby was in his championship Little League game. He really showed me something. Struck out three times. Made an error that lost the game. Parents were throwing things at our car and swearing at us as we drove off. Gosh, I was proud."

"The way to catch a knuckleball is to wait until it stops rolling and then pick it up."

"When I played, they didn't use fancy words like that
(emotionally distressed). They just said I couldn't hit."

“I signed with the Milwaukee Braves for three-thousand dollars.
That bothered my dad at the time because he didn’t have that kind of dough.
But he eventually scraped it up.”

To Marlon Mee: Thank you for the photos (and the photos of the Flower Planting below)! LP
